The Order of the Temple established itself in Portugal in the XII century to help the first Portuguese kings in the Christian reconquest as a continuation of the Crusades. In 1160 they founded a castle in Tomar. It was similar to the fortification in the Holy land and it was the most modern and advanced military construction existing at the time. After two centuries in 1312, the Order of the Temple was dissolved by Pope Clement, since it was growing in power and reputation. Meanwhile the Order of Christ was founded in Portugal. It inherited all the Templars’ spiritual and material wealth and preserved their crusade spirit during the Portuguese great discoveries.
