The Serra de Sintra microclimate allows you take part in open-air activities all year round. Adventure sports are a great way to explore this World Heritage region.

Should mountain biking be your thing, you have the greatest of challenges ahead. Circle the Serra de Sintra as you wind your way up to the fantastic Palácio da Pena. It is a test of both legs and stamina. It’s not without reason that Sintra features on the Tour de Portugal cycle race itinerary. Taking in the wonderful views may be the best pretext for a rest but the surprise at running across the palaces and castles en route more than justifies the effort.

And for a different kind of challenge, the hills of Sintra boast some excellent spots for climbing. The Pedra Amarela (Yellow Stone) and the Penedo da Amizade (Cliff of Friendship) are famously difficult.
However, those who make it to the summit claim the exhilaration you feel on reaching the top is indescribable. And you’re treated to some of the best views out over Sintra town.

Footpaths are the most popular way of getting around, and there are many sign-posted paths to lead you through this magical landscape. The most difficult path culminates at the coastline on Cabo da Roca, perched 100 metres up above the ocean. So explore the hills and coast of Sintra, and marvel at this incredible landscape at your own pace.
