Shopping in Madeira

After becoming enchanted with the green of nature, the blue of the sea and the island’s brightly-coloured towns and villages, you’ll certainly want to take a little of this paradise home with you!

Some holidays are simply unforgettable. In Funchal, walk through the city’s quiet streets along the beautifully-patterned stone pavements, visit the magnificent gardens, go shopping, or simply savour some unique moments sitting on the terraces of the city’s charming cafés.

Buy one of Madeira’s exquisite embroidered articles, which range from small handkerchiefs to the traditional and beautiful tablecloths, all of them genuine works of art.

Which is your favourite variety of grape? After you’ve tasted Madeira wine at one of the lodges or wine shops scattered about the city, you’ll want to buy at least one bottle and take it home with you.

Wicker articles are to be found everywhere in the city of Funchal, and all over the island too, but the main centre for the manufacture of wicker articles is Camacha, where you’ll find the widest possible choice of wickerwork in a surprising range of forms and styles.
Madeira’s flowers - such as orchids, birds-of-paradise, proteas and anthuriums - are the favourite souvenir of many tourists. You can buy them anywhere, at the municipal market or from florists.

No trip to Madeira is complete without a visit to the municipal market. This is a real centre for buying the best regional products, ranging from exotic flowers and fruits to wickerwork, tapestries and rugs and the famous Madeiran boots known as botas de vilão.
