Caving in the Azores/
Caving in the Azores
Place: Terceira
Photo: DRT Açores

Whilst the beautiful lagoons formed at the bottom of volcanic craters are one of the best-known tourism symbols of the Azores, there are other phenomena of great beauty that also attract visitors: caves, fumaroles, lava flows (known locally as "mistérios" or mysteries) or the remains of volcanic eruptions, such as Capelinhos, on the island of Faial.

In fact, the volcanic origins of the different islands of the Azores, situated at the meeting point of the tectonic plates of Europe, America and Africa, have created a series of important phenomena for those who are interested in vulcanism and speleology.

For speleologists, the descent into deep potholes such as Carvão, on the island of Terceira, or the possibility of following caves and extensive tubular chambers measuring several kilometres in length, offer them the chance to discover the marvellous spectacle of stalagmites, stalactites, columns and ledges formed by volcanic activity.
Roughly 200 natural cavities are known in the Azores, with tens of kilometres of subterranean passages, where many secrets and strange forms of life lie hidden. The recognition of the enormous landscape value of many of these caves has endowed them with excellent facilities for tourism.

Come and discover these phenomena and you’ll be absolutely amazed!
