Romance in Cascais and Sintra
/
Set aside two days during your stay in Lisbon to visit some of the more romantic places in the surrounding area.
Take the coastal road to Cascais, always with the Tagus for company. Enjoy a stroll through the centre of town and visit the Museu dos Condes de Castro Guimarães, housed in a palace by the seaside.
At the “Boca do Inferno” (The Jaws of Hell), you can gaze in wonderment at the great force of nature and the thousands of silver reflections in the sea. Further along the road, at the beach of Guincho, there is another seaside setting waiting for you, where you can enjoy an excellent meal of fresh fish or shellfish.
On the road that winds its way through the hills of the Serra de Sintra, take your loved one to the westernmost point of mainland Europe, the headland of Cabo da Roca. You can request a certificate to say that you have been here and take it away with you as a souvenir of this extraordinary experience. When you arrive in Colares, you can park your car here and take the tram to Sintra, a much more romantic way to approach the town.
The Sintra region has been classified as World Heritage under the category of a cultural landscape. As soon as you arrive in the town, you have the chance to admire some excellent contemporary art at the Sintra Museum of Modern Art, and then you might like to try the queijadas and travesseiros, two delicious local pastries. Make sure also to visit the Palácio Nacional de Sintra: its huge conical chimneys serve as a compass by which you can guide yourself in the early evening light as you stroll around the historic centre, where you can look for a gift in a handicraft shop and find a good restaurant to enjoy an excellent dinner.
Dedicate your second day exclusively to visiting the hills of Sintra. Begin with the Parque da Pena. Amidst its exotic and lush vegetation, there are all kinds of nooks and crannies hidden amongst its lakes and waterfalls that offer an irresistible invitation to enjoy a little romance. Make your way up to the palace, an Arabesque whim built at the top of the hill, and stop in the restaurant for lunch, while you feast your eyes on the breathtaking view all the way to the horizon.
Just like all beautiful things, Sintra has an aura of mystery. You can go much deeper into this sensation at the Quinta da Regaleira, full of legends and Masonic enigmas. After this unexpected encounter, come gently back to earth in the gardens of the Palácio de Seteais and enjoy a pleasant tea at the hotel installed inside the building. Very close by is Monserrate, offering you yet another perspective of your new passion: Sintra.
