Opened on Christmas Day 1918, the Café Sport started life as just another bar in the busy port and city of Horta. After the various cycles of coal-ships, the adventures of hydroplanes and transatlantic voyages, and once the blackouts of the Second World War had come to an end, the Café Sport transformed itself into the base for the crews of the Dutch tugboats that sailed the high seas.
It was in the 1950s that the yachts began once again to visit Faial and that the Café Sport began to build its unique reputation. Hospitality was always its watchword and it became the preferred safe haven of the yachtsmen, still known in those days as adventurers, who used to stop off on the island.
Since 1975, with José "Peter" Azevedo "at the helm", the Café Sport, or Peter’s, as it is better known, has calmly witnessed the continuing parade of the world’s best sailors, many famous international celebrities and an anonymous crowd of people, all of whom continue to find there the comfortable shelter that they need, together with the promise of a cool refreshing drink.
Come and discover the excitement of Horta and listen to the stories of seafarers in this hospitable bar, where the simplicity of the Azores can be clearly felt in the warm welcome dispensed to all visitors.
