Explore one of the largest protected areas in Portugal. In the far north-east of the country, the Montesinho Natural Park features relaxed walks through fine countryside with its rolling hills and deep valleys sheltering villages still preserving the old community ways.
Observe the wildlife native to the park, including otter and a species of wildcat. And over 150 species of bird fly the skies of Montesinho to keep you company on your hikes. Look upwards and spot the royal eagle and other birds of prey.
And on the banks of the river Côa the very origins of man are laid bare. Visit and discover the hundreds of pre-historic engravings spread out over tens of kilometres. A two-hour walk through the Vale do Côa Archaeological Park takes in many of the best examples. See with your own eyes how our ancestors viewed the nature of this region. Guided tours are available for those interested in the full story.
