According to tradition, this Beach takes its origin from the maçãs (apples) that would wash up on its sands, carried down to the coast by the Ribeira de Colares river.
Popular in the summer, the Beach covers a substantial area with space for a range of differing sporting activities. The sea, with its strong waves, boasts good surfing conditions.
Frequented by families from the region or who have holiday homes, one very picturesque way of getting to Maçãs Beach from Sintra during the summer months is by a traditional tram that has recently undergone a full restoration. |
