Parks of the Northeast
Place: Montesinho
Photo: João Paulo

A chestnut-tree, a vulture and a waterfall are the symbols of Northern Portugal’s three natural parks. Three distinct landscapes, each with its own unique species, examples of country life and peaceful harmony.

Montesinho, in the far north-east of Portugal, is a fantastic blend of beautiful natural riches and ancient cultures. The village that gave its name to the park, Rio de Onor and Guadramil are villages that live in peaceful harmony with nature and still preserve many memories of the traditional rural way of life. You can make your way through the mountains of the Serra de Montesinho and the Serra da Lombada in a variety of ways. Peacefully on foot or by bicycle or, more comfortably, by car.

The River Douro becomes international for a stretch of 122 kilometres, forming the country’s eastern border with Spain. The region’s green plateaux and deep valleys, which form enormous gorges, are highly sought after by many birds, some of which are in danger of extinction.
Make sure to see the traditional pigeon-lofts, numbering some 650 throughout the park, and combine the experience of nature with a visit to see the heritage of Miranda do Douro and Freixo de Espada à Cinta.

In the heart of Porto and Northern Portugal, forget all about routine in the Alvão Park. Ermelo and Lamas de Olo are two traditional villages that you must visit and also the starting points for some extremely interesting walks. Discover one of the park’s great treasures, its great diversity of fauna, and allow yourself to be surprised by the imposing waterfalls of the Fisgas de Ermelo.
