Serra da Estrela Park
Place: Serra da Estrela

The Serra da Estrela Natural Park provides the perfect backdrop for extreme sports and off-road adventuring.

In this fascinating landscape of hills, valleys and lakes, nature is everywhere.

Experience the sensation of unpowered flight at Linhares da Beira. This historic village, with its the local customs and traditions, has also become known as the national Mecca of hang-gliding. After all, its rugged geography lends itself to the sport. Alternatively, try taking to the air over the Mondego or Zêzere valleys, at nearby Manteigas.

In these glacial hills, three rivers - the Mondego, Zêzere and the Ceira - have their sources, ensuring plenty of water and greenery.
Combined with a 375-kilometre network of trails, the area is ideal for walking and other off-road activities.

To really get back to nature, combine abseiling, canoeing and swimming as you explore the upper stretches of these rivers. Perseverance will get you to places of great natural beauty. In winter, it snows in the Serra da Estrela hills offering an alternative range of activities, from traditional skiing to the more recent phenomenon of snowboarding. There are also motorised sleds, snowmobiles and many more open-air activities waiting. Don’t miss out!
