The best thing that you will discover in this peaceful town of white houses however, is the friendliness of its inhabitants. While you are here listen to their Alentejo choirs. Composed entirely of male voices, they sing slowly to the rhythm of the singers’ feet stamping on the ground.

Also look out for some of the local wrought iron and woodwork, crafted by patient, skilful hands.

For food lovers meanwhile there is lots to savour.

The region is well-known for its bread, olive-oil and wine. Sample the penny-royal soup, field mushrooms or boiled cabbage. Or try regional specialities such as game and black Iberian pig.

And just a few kilometres away you can experience local sausage and chees in the town of Brinches. It lies between Moura and Serpa. Both towns have their own important heritage, so while you are in the area why not pay them a visit too?
