Shopping in Lisboa
Place: S. Bento, Lisboa

Shopping in the city centre is certainly a pleasurable experience. There’s plenty of variety and quality, and you can find everything you need.

Chiado is an elegant shopping and residential district, which enjoyed its most golden period in the 19th century, when it became the preferred meeting place for intellectuals and artists. It still maintains all of its former charm and offers visitors a wide range of different shops. Ranging from bookshops that have remained in business for more than a hundred years to the most sophisticated jeweller’s stores and other shops that are ready to satisfy the demands of a younger and more up-to-date clientele.

Close by, if you continue up the hill past Lisbon’s largest concentration of second-hand booksellers, you’ll find the old historical quarter of Bairro Alto. Here you will also find a wide range of shops, in a quite unique coexistence between the more traditional and the avant-garde.

The district of Baixa / Rua Augusta is one of the busiest areas. It was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1755, and still preserves today its uniform and functional layout that was a characteristic feature of the 18th century.
Since then, it has turned into the most charismatic shopping precinct of downtown Lisbon.

The Avenida da Liberdade stretches all the way through the heart of the city. Decorated with centuries-old trees and cool shady areas, it is a very pleasant place for a stroll. It is one of the city’s most valuable streets from the property viewpoint, for here you will find Lisbon’s most expensive offices and the most elegant international fashion shops. As soon as you take your first few steps, you will also find world-famous shops, such as Massimo Dutti, Adolfo Dominguez, the Timberland casual wear shop, the eternal Calvin Klein, the unmistakable Armani or the rigorous lines of Alfred Dunhill. There are many others as well, all you have to do is stroll by and see for yourself.
