Playing golf in Madeira
Place: Palheiro, Madeira

Europe extends to include a small subtropical island paradise that has now become a leading golfing destination. Madeira is all this and much more.

The frequency of flights from Lisbon and other European capitals eases the journey to Funchal, the capital of this subtropical Eden of forests thousands of years old, spectacular mountains and coloured gardens that managed to get Winston Churchill painting.

And amidst all this beauty, first discovered by Portuguese explorers back in 1420, there are two suitably high quality courses designed by Robert Trent Jones. Take the challenge of the Santo da Serra. Experienced golfers consider it one of the most spectacular mountain courses in Europe. Try any one of its three combinations of 9 hole loops. However, wherever you play, depend on impeccable maintenance and fabulous views be they of the Ocean, Funchal bay or the exotic flowers of the island valleys.
And there are mountains to hike, sea views to enjoy from the second highest cape in Europe and walks along forest paths. The beauty of Madeira will ensure the effort passes smoothly. And explore Funchal, with its rich art collection dating from the time the caravels would drop anchor here as they proceeded on their Voyages of Discovery.

And 40 kilometres from Madeira, try the Seve Ballesteros designed course on the island of Porto Santo. Its 9 kilometres of beach and warm waters are particularly appreciated after a round of good golf.

The first big challenge is to make sure your game benefits from the surrounding beauty and natural landscape. But there are plenty more to come.
