The Santo da Serra Golf Club is considered to be one of the most spectacular courses in Europe, with breathtaking views over mountains and sea. Designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1991, this course is only a short distance from Funchal, and less than 15 minutes from Madeira’s Intercontinental Airport. With 27 holes available for play, the course is 6,039 metres in length, with a par of 72, and is characterised by its large fairways and greens and a choice of tees, to suit golfers of all levels.
Some 500 metres above the bay of Funchal is the Palheiro Golf Course, close to the exotic gardens of Quinta do Palheiro. Opened in 1993, it was designed by Cabel Robinson, who took great care to make the best use of the high hills and deep valleys of this region to provide professional golfers with an exciting and competitive challenge.
This par-72, 18-hole course has a total length of 6,015 metres and, amongst other facilities, it is equipped with a pro-shop, putting green and driving range.
The Porto Santo Golf Course, designed by the Spanish champion Severiano Ballesteros, is the archipelago’s largest course, making it possible for up to 500 people to play golf at the same time.
The Madeira Islands Open, which is part of the PGA European tour, is the most important golf tournament held in Madeira each year.
Playing a round of golf on one of these fantastic courses is an experience that you will not want to miss!
