Family fun in Gerês
Place: Gerês

The Serra do Gerês protected reserve in the north of Portugal represents an ideal destination for family holidays.
An area of great natural beauty and agreeable climate, Gerês is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque regions in Portugal. The diversity of local flora and fauna creates a perfect natural environment for a family holiday.

Recreational activities on offer locally include a range of water sports out on the Caniçada reservoir; nature walks (in group or with a guide), or visits to traditional local villages. Of particular interest are Soajo, and Lindoso, with its imposing castle and communal granary.

Accommodation is available for all tastes and budgets, from campsites to country hotels, to the Aldeias de Portugal facilities and charming rural tourism properties.
All of these share great service and a typically warm welcome.

On such a physical holiday your family are certain to build up an appetite, and the quality of the local gastronomy matches the surroundings. Get stuck in to impressive portions of local specialities such as ‘bacalhau à minhota’, a local interpretation of cod, the national favourite, often served here baked with broa bread. There is also roast goat to accompany a local wine, and all the sweets and desserts needed to appeal to all family members.
