On the night of the 23rd June, head down to the Ribeira and join in the celebration of São João night in Porto.
See the ‘Cascatas de São João’ – small water themed grotto altars with a Saint at the centre – and dance to the sound of the bands.
On São João night, all excesses are allowed. The local tradition is to choose somebody you wish well, and hit them over the head with a leek! It’s a great way to get a conversation going!
Join a ‘Rusga’, where various groups representing a neighbourhood set out on their way to a party, and try and convince as many people they meet on the way to come and join them.
On New Year’s Eve, the party rolls on Porto style. Raisins are eaten with sparkling wine under the light of a firework display that illuminates the city, its bridges and the river Douro.
