Built in the 17th century, the Igreja de São João Evangelista is one of the finest examples of the fusion that took place between the Mannerist and baroque styles on the island of Madeira.
The exuberant decoration of the church’s interior, begun in 1647 under the patronage of the Jesuits, consists of a combination of valuable carved and gilded altarpieces, patterned and figurative tile panels, paintings on the ceiling and frescoes in the nave and sacristy.
