Wines of Ribatejo and Oeste/
Wines of Ribatejo and Oeste
Place: Almourol
Photo: Paulo Magalhães

The Ribatejo wine region stretches along the River Tagus from Lisbon to the Zêzere, while the Oeste wine region is closer to the beaches.

Ribatejo wines owe their quality to fertile riverside meadows. These also provide pasture for bulls and horses, the main attraction of local bullfights and festivals.

Where the river Zêzere flows into the Tagus you’ll find the graceful Almourol Castle on its tiny island and the pretty town of Constância. From Santarém, the gothic capital of Portugal, look out over the river and see historical buildings and beautiful villages.

The Ribatejo region boasts two nature reserves, the Estuário do Tejo and Paul do Boquilobo. Along the river you’ll find the famous limestone caves of Santo António and Alvados.
There are stretches of water, such as the Castelo de Bode Dam, that are ideal for water sports. Not too far away is the lovely city of Tomar where you’ll see wonderful examples of Manueline architecture at Convento de Cristo.

The Oeste wine route stretches from Ribatejo to the beaches on the Atlantic coast, like Santa Cruz or Baleal. You can taste the wines produced in this region whilst visiting the fishing town of Peniche, Cape Carvoeiro, the Berlengas Islands or the fascinating medieval town of Óbidos.

The delicious white wines of this area are perfect to enjoy with seafood.
