Wonders of Portugal
Place: Lisboa

On July 7, 2007, the new seven Wonders of the World were revealed in Lisbon. On the same date, the Wonders or Portugal were also chosen. Discover them all here.
Come to Portugal and visit the leading monuments, that reflect the country's long history.

Start in Oporto and the North, with a visit to Guimarães Castle, the birthplace of Portugal, or enjoy prime examples of the Portuguese baroque style in two ex-libris monuments in Oporto - the Church of São Francisco and the Torre dos Clérigos - or visit the Palace of Mateus, near to the city of Vila Real.

Continue your journey to the Centre of Portugal, where the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in Europe, will guide you through this student city. You should also make sure to visit the nearby Roman ruins in Conímbriga, that date back to the time of the Roman occupation of the Iberian peninsular.

We then continue to the capital, including two essential monuments that have marked the history of Lisbon and Portugal - the Monastery of Jerónimos and the Torre de Belém. Other “must-see” locations in the region include, the National Palace of Pena in Sintra, the National Palace of Queluz, the Convent and Basilica of Mafra, the Monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha, Almourol castle, the Convent of Christ in Tomar and Óbidos castle.
Further south, you'll be amazed by sights such as the hilltop walled towns of Marvão or Monsaraz. Time seems to move more slowly here and it’s never sufficient in order to appreciate the infinite surrounding landscape. It's well worth visiting the Roman temple in Évora and the Ducal Palace in Vila Viçosa, that date from different centuries.

Round of your trip to Portuguese heritage sites in the Fortress of Sagres, that conjures up the memory of the Infante D. Henrique. You'll be impressed by the immense view over the sky and sea in this far southwestern corner of the European continent.

Embark upon the full itinerary or return on several occasions in order to visit the monuments at your own pace. In all the respective locations, discover the excellent local hospitality and customs, spending the night in a rural tourism hotel, a Manor House of Portugal or one of the famous Pousada luxury inns. You'll never forget the experience.
