In the direction from Braga to Gerês, we encounter the Pousada de Santa Maria do Bouro, a 12th century Cistercian monastery, that is one of the most charismatic works of Portuguese architecture. The building was restored by one of Portugal' most distinguished architects - Souto Moura - who used materials such as glass, iron and wood, while preserving the building's visual appearance as a ruin.
Integrated within the building’s monastic rigour, but with a comfortable and contemporary decoration, this Pousada is an obligatory starting point for cultural trips through the Minho region.
