Lying a few kilometres to the south of Figueira da Foz, the large sandy expanse of Cova-Gala Beach is divided up by sea breaks, designed to check the advance of the sea and which serve both to calm the sea and act as a wind break.
The southern half of the Beach, surrounded by dunes and brush, is less popular with sunbathers who tend to congregate closer to the nearby built up area.
The good surfing and bodyboarding conditions have ensured the Beach is a regular host of competitive events
