Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Sameiro

Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Sameiro
The Nossa Senhora do Sameiro Sanctuary is one of the most popular shrines to Mary in all of Portugal. There are always large crowds of pilgrims for the two annual celebrations held on the first Sunday in June and the last Sunday in August.

This neo-classical building was built in the 19th century on the wishes of Father Martinho da Silva. Artistically, there is little of interest beyond the silver tabernacle and a statue of its patron completed in Rome by sculptor Eugénio Maccagnani and installed in the sanctuary in 1880.

However, the visit is made more than worthwhile for some of the best views out over the region provided by the vantagepoint of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Sameiro, perched some 566 meters above sea level.
