Vila Flor

Vila Flor

Towns and Villages

The town was previously known as Póvoa de Além-Sabor, until D. Dinis, king of Portugal, visited the area and was so enchanted by its beauty that he gave it the name of Vila Flor (Flower Town), ordering walls to be built around the town, although all that now remains of these is the southern gate or the Porta de D. Dinis.

Time should always be set aside for a visit to the parish church, which was rebuilt in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the baroque style, as well as to the D. Berta Cabral Museum, which contains a number of interesting archaeological exhibits found in the region.
