A traditional fishing village, the Esmoriz Beach has hung onto some of its "palheiro" huts, the wooden constructions dating back to the early part of the 20th century built by farmers as second homes so that whenever they were not working the lands, they could dedicate their time to fishing. Nowadays, these places have been converted into holiday home even while fishing continues from the northern section of Esmoriz Beach.

Sunbathers mostly head to the southern section, known as Barrinha, where all the necessary support infrastructures are to be found. This is also the best spot for surfing and bodyboarding although swimming requires the greatest care and not straying out of the waters under the surveillance of lifeguards, as these waters tend to be very dangerous.
