The core works of Joan Miró, owned by the Collection of Contemporary Art of the State, transferred to the Municipality of Porto and deposited at the Serralves Foundation, consists of 85 works and includes paintings, sculptures, collages, drawings and tapestries of the famous Catalan master. The Collection covers six decades of work by Joan Miró, from 1924 to 1981, thus constituting an excellent introduction to her work and to her main artistic concerns.
The exhibition takes place following the completion of the renovation and adaptation project of the Serralves House, signed by the architect Álvaro Siza, who was supported by the Municipality of Porto, under the protocol defining the conditions of deposit of the Miró Collection in Serralves.
Joan Miró (1893-1983), one of the great "shape makers" of the 20th century, was simultaneously an aesthetic "assassin" who challenged the traditional boundaries of the media in which he worked. In his art, different practices dialogue among themselves, crossing the means: painting communicates with drawing; sculpture seduces woven objects; and collages, always conjugations of disparate entities, act as the major principle or matrix for the exploration of the depths of the real.
This exhibition does not follow a chronological or linear format: the works are aggregated thematically, trying to give a holistic view of the path of the artist. The various rooms address different aspects of his art: the development of a sign language; the artist’s encounter with abstract painting that was done in Europe and America; his interest in the process and the expressive gesture; its complex responses to the social drama of the 1930s; the innovative approach to collage; the impact of Southeast Asian aesthetics on its practice of drawing; and, above all, its incessant curiosity about the nature of materials.
