Two of dance's greatest names and a young choreographer come together in one program: William Forsythe, George Balanchine and Andrew McNicol. Three works from very different eras and generations of choreographers will be presented, but they dialogue with each other through a basis in classical dance. A program that highlights the different challenges the CNB performers face when dancing them in a single evening.
Workwithinwork, by William Forsythe, premiered in 1998 by the Frankfurt Ballet. With an internationally recognized body of work, Forsythe approaches dance in an innovative and challenging way, exploring but simultaneously deconstructing codes of classical dance technique and breaking conventions through off-balance movements and rapid changes of direction. Forsythe is also recognized for the way he transforms the stage space, creating complex and dynamic choreographies that are as challenging for the dancers as they are for the audience.
Andrew McNicol's work stands out for its poetic beauty and deep connection between movement and music. Classical dance is at the base of his work, but McNicol always gives it a contemporary feel, which is created from the inspiration offered by the body of dancers. In this program, we premiere a new creation by the British choreographer, designed for the dancers of the CNB.
George Balanchine will perhaps be the great mentor of this evening, since it is from the revolution he has driven in dance that he has come to influence, directly or indirectly, creators and dancers all over the world.
