Igreja de Santo Estevão de Alfama
Monuments
The Igreja de Santo Estevão, situated in Alfama, was built in 1733, on the foundations of a former 12th-century church.
The church’s design, as well as its rather unusual positioning in a north-south direction, was the work of its architect José da Costa Negreiros. Due to the steepness of the slope on which it stands and its consequent orientation, the church’s façade overlooks a spacious square. After the 1755 earthquake, it had to be partly rebuilt.
It is well worth paying a visit to the church’s interior, with its rich decoration of 18th-century azulejos and the carved and gilded woodwork of the high altarpiece, produced by the sculptor José de Almeida.
