Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, Matriz de Peniche

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, Matriz de Peniche

Monuments

Located to the north of the peninsula of Peniche, this church dates from the early 16th century, having been built, according to tradition, on the ruins of another church dedicated to St. Vincent.

This particular local cult seems to be based on legend. It is said that the image of the Virgin Mary was found in a small cave on the Papoa peninsula, thereafter being worshipped at the former church of St. Vincent until its very own shrine was built in the 16th century.

Amongst various other features of interest, attention is drawn to the chancel, devoted to the Virgin Mary (said to be Our Lady of Help), St. Peter Gonzalez and St. Vincent, and an altarpiece of carved and gilded woodwork from the late 17th century. Also worthy of note are the painted caisson ceiling and the 18th-century tile panels depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, as well as secular themes.
