Rota Ouro do Douro
Rota Ouro do Douro
Tours and Other Tourism Services
It is said that Portugal was founded here some 860 years ago. Now, the city of Oporto has been designated world heritage. Its history is closely tied to a 1756 Marquis of Pombal decision to, for the first time in world history, demarcate areas with specific characteristics as most suitable for wine production - thereby establishing the Demarcated Douro region.
The transport of wine was made by the highly characteristic riverboat, the Rabelo. Now, the Rabelo is one of the defining symbols of the city of Oporto and its proud ties with the river that runs through its heart. For the last 200 years, the Douro has played a key role in the city's economic development and serving as the main thoroughfare for the export of some of the world's best wines.
We take great pleasure in inviting you to travel with us back up this route. Travelling the river opens up the great contrasts in history revealing memories of times of great poverty and grandeur where man's great creativity and sheer effort served to transform granite stones into the "Hanging Terraced Gardens". We term this the Douro Route.
