Monuments
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, belonging to the vanished 16th century Convent of São Francisco, still has the original Late Gothic door, although the façade reveals Baroque and revivalist alterations made during its history. In the 19th century, the convent was dissolved and the space used for the wool factory, while the church remained open for worship.
In the interior, it is worth admiring the vault with its four-pointed stars and the 16th century side chapels, belonging to the Rodrigo de Castro family who held the Mayoralty of Belmonte. The chancel has a wood-panelled ceiling, with paintings alluding to the life of Christ. Among the gilt carved panels that cover the walls, the image of São Francisco stands out.
Right next to the Church you can visit the Public Gardens, which have a fine view of the River Zêzere Valley.
