Monuments
Located in the Largo da Memória, this is an elegant neo-classical church dedicated to Our Lady of Livramento (Suffrage).
With an Italian influence, the interior is lavishly decorated in ivory and on the main altar there is a painting by Pedro Alexandrino (18th century) depicting the motive for the church´s construction.
Designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Carlo Bibienna, it was ordered built in 1760 by king José I, in gratitude for having survived an assassination attempt at that very location. The king was returning from the house of a court lady from the Távoras household with whom it is said he was having an affair. The Marquis of Pombal, his minister, took advantage of the circumstances to accuse the family, already his enemies, of conspiracy. The five family members were subsequently condemned. The episode was subsequently commemorated by a pillar in Beco do Chão, just off Rua de Belém, and which can still be seen.
In 1923, the tomb of the Marquis of Pombal was transferred here.
