Aljezur Castle (Castelo de Aljezur)

The Castle, built on the ruins of a Roman-period castle, which archaeological remains date back to the Bronze Age, was part of the defensive system that protected Silves during the Almohad period, between the 12th and 13th centuries, when the town was conquered during the reign of King Afonso III of Portugal by the knights of Paio Peres, Master of the Order of Saint James.

Built in stone masonry, the fortified enclosure has a polygonal plan adapted to the terrain. Two turrets, distinct in form, are attached to the wall. Inside, there is a cistern and the ruins of a group of dwellings that were in use during the Christian medieval period.

The fortification, which was losing its strategic importance and which in the 16th century suffered great damage due to the Great Earthquake (1755), was partially rebuilt during the Centenary Celebrations in the 20th century and was classified as IIP – Property of Public Interest.
