Celebrating International Museum Day and Museums at Night

Celebrate International Museum Day by visiting a museum on the 18th of May.

As usual, the day is being promoted by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and will be marked in Portugal by a vast array of initiatives and activities intended to help visitors get to know a museum in a way that is different from normal. This is your opportunity to discover and explore areas of a museum that are not normally open to the public and to take part in guided tours, workshops and ateliers for all ages.

Many museums will also be participating in the European Museums at Night initiative, remaining open throughout the evening so that you can visit their collections at times when they would not normally be open. There will be special activities organised for this event too. This year, the event will be taking place on the night of Saturday, 16 May.

The theme proposed by ICOM for 2015 is "Museums for a Sustainable Society". The intention is to draw the public's attention to the effects of human actions on the environment. In this context, the event will be highlighting the role that museums can play in encouraging new ways of thinking and acting, fostering respect for the limits and diversity of nature.

The general programme of activities at national level is available online at www.patrimoniocultural.pt and at www.facebook.com/Dia.Internacional.dos.Museus.
