Convent and Church of São Gonçalo
The Convent of São Gonçalo was the first convent to be built in Angra do Heroísmo, and constitutes the largest set of convent buildings in the city. It was founded in 1545, but was subsequently remodelled.

The Church has a very simple exterior. Inside we can see several notable works such as the gilded woodwork altarpieces, 18th-century statues and paintings and azulejo-tile panels dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. It's also worth noting the large-scale 17th-century crucifix, the "Cristo Divino Imperador", attributed to the Spanish school and a magnificent railing - which is a unique example in Portuguese architecture due to its oval form.
