Marble Route Cultural, Creative, Industrial and Heritage Tourism
The Marble Route is a creative tourism offering of industrial and heritage scope, where marble is the endogenous reference product.
The combination of the natural product – marble – and its connection to the history, culture and heritage of the Anticlinal dos Mármores region, in the municipalities of Alandroal, Borba, Estremoz, Sousel and Vila Viçosa, one of the oldest and most productive extractive surfaces of this resource in Portugal, makes the region’s landscape distinctive in its architecture through marble applications.
The Marble Route promotes this noble ornamental stone and the heritage associated with it as a cultural product, combining it with other tourist experiences. For example, we invite visitors to taste the typical cuisine and convent sweets, integrated into the itinerary of places and sites in the region.
Given the richness of the landscape shaped by human hands, the Marble Route highlights industrial spaces in its visits, including marble quarries, processing companies and stonemasons’ workshops.
The Marble Route enhances visits to unique places of our history and heritage, a variety of monuments and sites where marble has been used in its finest artistic expression.
Visits to the Marble Route are organised and led by guides – specialised interpreters, knowledgeable about the territory and its heritage. They are licensed by Turismo de Portugal with RNAAT no. 145/2014, with interpreters available in Portuguese, English, Spanish or French.
Visits take place every day of the year, for various audiences, with special conditions for groups.
