Monuments
The Church of Santa Maria Maior, the parish church of Chaves, is remarkable for its historical and architectural richness, a symbol of the various transformations it has undergone over the centuries.
Located in the historic centre of the city, this medieval monument was rebuilt in the 12th century, on the rubble of former Christian temples, after the reconquest of Chaves in 1160. From the original construction, the imposing tower, with two bell towers on each side and the round arched portal, remains preserved.
Combining styles from Romanesque to Renaissance, the interior features the main altar and side chapels, which enrich the space with its gilded carvings, tiles and a starry vault in the chancel.
