The Church of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires (Our Lady of the Martyrs) was built in the 16th century on top of an old chapel dedicated to the “Martyrs”, the Christians who settled in the town during the Reconquest (8th to 15th centuries).

Raised to the status of “Igreja Matriz” (Main Church) after the 1755 earthquake destroyed the Church of Santiago, which was located inside the castle, it was restored and enlarged in the 18th century.

In the chancel and side chapels, the images of the Archangel Gabriel, dating from the 15th century, Nossa Senhora da Encarnação e dos Mártires (Our Lady of the Incarnation and the Martyrs), from the 16th century, and Santa Luzia (Saint Lucy), from the 18th century, are worth seeing.
