Igreja da Misericórdia de Silves
Igreja da Misericórdia de Silves
Monuments
This church was built mid-16th century after Silves had been integrated into the House of Rainhas (Queens), with king João II bestowing it on queen Leonor. It was due to serve the already founded Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Religious Charity Institution). Of the original structure, there is still the Manueline door forming part of the austere façade shorn of any other significant ornamentation.
The interior is extremely simple with just a single nave. Attention is drawn to the Mannerist painted panel in the main chapel. There were substantial changes from the 18th century onwards as can be seen in the floral detail and rocaille style pelmets and the coat of arms belonging to king João V. The central painting depicts the Visitation and dates back to 1727-28, according to entries made in the Santa Casa accounts.
