Forming part of the Jesuits’ College, the Igreja do Santíssimo Salvador is one of the largest churches in the Azores. Decorated in the Baroque style, it began to be built in 1680.
The façade is simple but imposing. The most notable features of the highly sumptuous decoration inside the church are the silver antependium, the carved and gilded woodwork, the altarpieces in the transept, the panels of historiated azulejos, an extremely fine jacaranda lectern with ivory inlays, a large sacristy chest of drawers made of pausanto and an organ dating from the beginning of the 19th century. Because of all these features, this church is a remarkable example of 18th-century Portuguese religious art.
