Monuments
In 1192, a brotherhood of Hospitaller friars was established in Portugal with the mission of helping the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, which was at that time the largest centre of Christian pilgrimage in Europe. The friars built a church dedicated to Our Lady of Rocamadour, who was greatly worshipped in France and whose name became distorted to Reclamador.
The church was considerably altered in the 17th century, although it still preserves the buttresses of its original structure. The high altar has a 17th-century wooden sculpture of the patron saint, whilst in the granite Renaissance pulpit is a scallop shell, the symbol worn by the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Also worthy of note is another 17th-century wooden statue, representing Santiago Matamouros on horseback and dressed in the typical costume of the time.
