In the second half of the 20th century, the small fishing village of Tocha became a sought after resort without ever losing its original identity. Out on its sands, there are still examples of the traditional wooden stilt platforms built by fishermen to protect their tools and equipment. Nowadays, they have been transformed into attractive and characteristic holiday accommodation.
Surrounded by protected dunes, Tocha Beach covers an enormous extent of golden sand that stretches off to the north and the practically deserted Palheirão Beach. The sea, with powerful waves, provides some of the best surfing and bodyboarding conditions.
