Lee Ufan (b. 1936) is a South Korean artist who redefined the relationship between matter, space, and perception in postwar art. A central figure and leading theorist of the Japanese Mono ha movement, he emphasized raw materials such as stone, steel, and glass, exploring the tensions between nature, objects, and space. At the same time, his painting, which is closely related to Dansaekhwa, uses minimal gestures to explore time, emptiness, and presence. In his first major exhibition in Portugal, at the Serralves House and Park, paintings and sculptures interact with the architecture and landscape, affirming art as an ongoing encounter between materials, space, and the viewer.
