Monuments
This group of buildings formed the first headquarters of the Carmelite Order in the Iberian Peninsula. It was built in the Gothic period by the Knights Hospitaller.
The passage of time has erased from the stone the memories of its original style (only a few architectural features are still preserved in the inside chapels), whilst other artistic styles were introduced in later years, most particularly the Renaissance style, which can be seen in the marble portico.
Also worthy of note on the inside of the church are the side chapels: in the first one on the right, dedicated to St. Anne, attention is drawn to a Renaissance portico, whilst in the fourth chapel, on the same side, the ribbed cross vault is lined with a beautiful pattern of polychrome glazed tiles. On the left, the first chapel dedicated to St. Martin has its ceiling lined with blue and yellow glazed tiles.
The Renaissance marble portico is surmounted by the coat of arms of the Archbishop of Braga, D. Baltasar Limpo, born in Moura, who commissioned its construction.
On the floor of the church are various tombstones, one of which bears this curious inscription: "Here lies João de Abril, who laughed himself to death".
