Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro was a multifaceted artist: caricaturist, illustrator, ceramist, decorator, costume designer and businessman.

In the words of César Machado, he was "an artist. In everything and from everything artist." Born and lived most of his life in Lisbon, he collaborated with writers, journalists, actors and directors, demonstrating dynamism, entrepreneurship and a passion for theater and the visual arts. He traveled through European cities and lived in Rio de Janeiro for four years, running humorous newspapers. Liberal, anti-monarchist and socially committed, he defended the Republic, progress and traditions. Playful and biting, he marked the 19th century with humor and reflection. The exhibition in seven rooms reveals the breadth of his legacy.
