The relationship between music and the animal world spans centuries of musical creation, drawing both on the direct imitation of sounds and on the evocation of movements, behaviors, or cultural associations that listeners’ imaginations have gradually developed over time.

Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 82 became known as The Bear because of the resemblance of its final movement to the bagpipes that accompanied dancing bears, while Symphony No. 83 evokes the clucking of chickens; while Christian Lindberg, in his Double Bass Concerto, explores the strength and agility of the black bear in an interpretation by Ercole de Conca.
