Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Officium Defunctorum is one of the great works of the European Renaissance and a landmark of Spanish sacred polyphony. Composed for the funeral of Empress Maria of Austria in Madrid, this piece traces the key moments of the funeral rite, standing out for its expressive intensity and musical restraint.
In the second part, the program features the Missa pro defunctis for eight voices by Duarte Lobo, a central figure in 17th-century Portuguese sacred music. Published in 1621, this work combines solemnity, balance, and contrapuntal richness, revealing the continuity of the Iberian polyphonic tradition and the dialogue between two leading figures in sacred music.
