Purcell and Contemporary Female Composers
Purcell and Contemporary Female Composers
Events
The program blends the Baroque music of Henry Purcell with contemporary works by female composers such as Caroline Shaw, Laura Marconi, and Meredi.
Arias, choruses, and preludes from the semi-opera The Fairy Queen, inspired by William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, evoke nature, the contradictions of love, and the magic of the night. In addition to these works is Hypophysis, a collaboration between the Sjaella ensemble and the artist Shara Nova, as well as other compositions that explore different sensibilities. Amid birdsong, longing, and silence, the concert bridges the gap between Baroque imagination and contemporary musical perspectives.
