Porto - Accessible Tour

Porto

Whether it is for a few days or a long weekend, don’t miss out on discovering the charms of Porto. In the historical centre (the Old town), São Bento Train Station is the point of arrival into the city and a key geographical reference. To visit the city, there are three tours that start here. They highlight the most important tourist attractions.

In general, the city of Porto has good access with paving which is regular and in a good condition. Materials most often used are basalt or limestone paving and granite slabs, enabling the visitor to move around with certainty and comfort. However, the slope of some streets in the Old Town should be noted because it can make the experience difficult. In general, the pavements are wide and regular. Pedestrian crossings are low and level, making crossing easier and a significant number of them already have tactile paving, making the route safer. In addition, there are audible alerts indicating the amount of time pedestrians have to cross.

Let us start our visit in the Centro Histórico (Old Town) and go down to Ribeira, next to the river and afterwards, visit the most commercial area in the city: Bolhão, Santa Catarina and Batalha. We can cross the river to Vila Nova de Gaia, go up to the Serra do Pilar and enjoy an amazing view of the city. The third tour takes in key monuments, such as the Torre dos Clérigos (Clérigos Tower), a trademark of Porto; then the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis (Soares dos Reis National Museum); finishing in the pleasant Jardins do Palácio de Cristal (Gardens of the Crystal Palace).

There are many other attractions not included in these tours. Among them, it is worth mentioning Foz do Douro (the mouth of the Douro River), the Casa da Música (House of Music) and the Museu de Serralves (Serralves Museum). They are accessible places that are well worth a visit. You can get there by normal public transport or by your own means.
